Antivirus - Review of the Top 3 Antivirus Programs

Computer security is essential due to the number of hackers, spyware and virus developers on the internet. If one's computer is not up-to-date on the latest anti-spyware and anti-virus programs, there is a very good change that the computer can become infected, which can cause harm to the hard drive, RAM, video card, not to mention personal security.

PC World Magazine reviewed, tested, and announced their top 10 antivirus software packages that are 100% standalone (meaning they are not included in any Operating System, or OS, software). Here are their picks for 2010:

1. G-Data Antivirus -While at the #1 spot, the tests done by PC World shows that it definitely swept away most of the malware found on the computer, and they liked its clean interface. However, they did find that it offered little instruction and guidance when working with other software.

2. Symantic Norton Antivirus - Notably one of the most popular antivirus packages, PC World enjoyed the extra features, and while the malware detection was strong, it wasn't "stellar". Ideal for the home or office where there isn't a great deal of tech-knowledge.

3. Kaspersky Lab Antivirus - Kaspersky was applauded for its ability to provide "proactive protection", but the basic detection methods were a bit lacking. The pop-ups that appear as warnings were also confusing to understand.

4. BitDefender Antivirus - BitDefender was a pretty good malware blocker, but the users found the interface to be a bit confusing. It will do what it's intended to do, but it does take some figuring out.

5. Panda Antivirus Pro - Overall, this software was widely liked. It was simple to use, and easy to operate, however they found that altering program settings was a tedious task.

6. F-Secure Anti-virus - F-secure was great at cleaning up detecting viruses, however wasn't too strong in detecting malware. There were also a few software bugs.

7. Avira AntiVir Premium - If you're not a "techie" like most computer users, this software may be a bit advanced. It doesn't detect behavioral activity, but it is good at cleaning and detecting malware and viruses.

8. Trend Micro AntiVirus Plus AntiSpyware - Trend provides a nice clear interface for its users, but it hides the actions it's taking while running, and its malware detection is "poor".

9. Eset Nod 32 Antivirus 4 - Eset looks very high-tech, and it has some great extra features besides the antivirus protection, however it fails in malware detection.

10. McAfee Antivirus Plus - McAfee excels in malware detection, however its proactive protection was described as "weak".
